7 Social Media Tactics for Explosive Results in Your Business

First, let's define the term Explosive Results for our usage.

A standard social media campaign helps spread the word about you and encourages other people to as well.

An explosive social media campaign has inherent viral exposure, inspires community driven communication, helps make the web a better place, and even brings joy to people, however fleeting.

When you share in social media, if your goal is just to get more people to see your links, you're on the right track, but at the same time, you're limiting your potential. You may think that getting explosive results from social media will take more time, energy and money, but this doesn't have to be the case.

If you're a business owner, you know that working harder doesn't necessarily mean better results - what if

Windows 7 versus Windows Vista. Who will win? Maybe Chrome OS

Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows 7 computer operating system hopes to pull off a major trick with memory — not computer memory, but that of its users.

It's supposed to make us forget Vista.

The Vista operating system, which Windows 7 will replace this month, has had a less than stellar reputation since its debut in 2007.

Because of Vista's technical foibles, sluggish operation and inability to play nicely with some programs, many consumers and professionals shunned it, refusing to update from Microsoft's XP operating system. Apple Inc. made fun of Vista in a set of TV commercials, and Microsoft replied with ads that suggested Vista wasn't that awful.

The Windows 7 upgrade, which will sell for $119 for the Home Premium consumer version, is a chance at redemption. But it's also a campaign to head off the first real competition Windows has had in the PC field.

Google Inc. plans to introduce its first operating system, Chrome OS, next year. Because it will be a so-called cloud computing system — with many of its operations living on the Internet — it's hyped to be extremely fast, with the ability to evolve constantly.

How to Become a Wise Google.com User

There are dozens of tricks you can learn to speed up and improve your Google searches. Here are five useful tips.

1.  To search for something on a specific Web site, type site:example.com and then your search terms. For instance, a Google search for me on Orlando Sentinel.com
would look like this: site:orlandosentinel.com Etan Horowitz. The search results Google returns will all be from that Web site. This is often a better method for finding information on a particular Web site than using the site's own search function.

2.  To filter your search results by the type of Web sites (videos, blogs, etc) or by date, after you conduct a Google search, click on the "show options" link at the top of the search-results page. You should see a number of filters you can use. If you are signed into your Google account when you do Web browsing, you can even filter for pages you have or have not visited previously.

3.  If your search results contain links to PDF files, you can view them with their original formatting without having to download them. To do this, click on the link that says "Quick View" underneath the title of the search result. Google has not yet rolled this feature out for all PDFs.

4.  You can use Google to answer your questions by entering certain search terms. For instance, to get a word's definition, type define and then the word you want to look up. For conversions such as currency, type something such as "5 dollars = ? euros."

5.  To see how popular a particular search term is right now, search for it and then scroll down to the bottom of the first page of search results. If it's a hot topic, you should see a graph at the bottom of the page showing how popular the search term is. To see a list of all of the popular search terms, visit google.com/trends.

This post was brought to you by:

Etan Horowitz Sentinel. To see more of The Orlando Sentinel or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.OrlandoSentinel.com. Copyright (c) 2009, The Orlando Sentinel, Fla.

Now over to you. Do you know of any other ways Google users can become wiser? I'd like to know how.

As a wise google.com user, i will want you to start making use of google.org.

How to Get Your Blog Indexed on Google

This post was originally written on Problogger.net by AdesBlog.com. Follow Ades on twitter @ades. The original post is titled "5 Ways to Get Your Blog Indexed by Google in 24 Hours"

We all know that content is king and that if you keep blogging… if you keep doing what you love… the traffic and the money will follow suit. While that’s partially true, there is also things that you can do to:

  • Index your newly launched blog fast by major Search Engines
  • Increase traffic to your blog
  • Improve your SERPs (Search Engine Result Positions)

Why wait right? Content can be king but waiting around for traffic to come by itself is not a good way to start blogging. So let’s start… Getting Indexed Let’s say you launched a blog today and want it on Google’s results tomorrow. Can this be done? Yes.

Easiest way to get indexed by major Search Engines is to get mentioned by established blogs. This usually will get your blog indexed within 24 hours. But since we are new (i.e the newly launched blog of ours) I don’t think any blogger want to mention it. So instead of begging other bloggers to notice your newly launched blog, you just have to figure out other ways of getting indexed by Google fast. Can it be done? Absolutely! (All it takes a little effort on your side).

1. Blog Communities

There are few blog related community portals that have a very good rankings in Google and other Major Search Engines Results, they are: MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, Blogged and NetworkedBlogs, particularly MyBlogLog. This means that if you get your blog on these blog communities, Google will have no other choice but to index your blog. So, go ahead and register for an account on these communities and list your blog on it. Once you are done you will have a page like this, this and this.

What to pay attention: Your blog’s description (have a proper write-up), keywords & tags (add related keywords and tags to your listing, this will be used by other members to find your blog), branding (put your logo, avatars, screenshots etc. have a consistent branding everywhere), and list your blog in the correct category.

2. Site Valuation & Stats Sites

Some of those How Much Your Site Worth? sites have a good ranking in Search Engines. All you need to do is to go there and check how much your site worth. This would create a special page for your blog (like this) and consecutively it would be indexed by Google. Here is a list of worthy sites: WebsiteOutlook, StatBrain, CubeStat, WebTrafficAgents, BuiltWith, WhoIs, QuarkBase, URLfan and AboutTheDomain.

3. Feed Aggregators

List your blog’s feed in these feed aggregators Feed-Squirrel, OctoFinder, FeedAdage. Once you have submitted your feed to these sites, they will keep track of your newly published posts and index them in their site. Whenever someone clicks on the blog post title, he/she will be redirected to your original blog post sending you free traffic and getting your latest posts indexed by Google.

4. Social Sites

Registering account on Social Sites with the same username as your blog’s URL is very effective in getting your blog indexed by Search Engines. Especially for those targeted keywords.

For example, if your blog’s name is WhiteElephant, it’s a good practice to register the same username at twitter as @WhiteElephant, and to create a page in Facebook at www.facebook.com/WhiteElephant. Having a consistent keyword-username on all major Social Sites will help get your blog indexed faster, and at a later stage it will also help build a “brand” for your blog.

So, get account on major Social Sites for your newly launched blog, namely: Twitter, Facebook (create a page for your blog), Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious etc. By the way, it’s a good pratice to create a separate Social Sites account for each of your projects. This way you can stay focused and post messages that are related to your project. In the long run, this will help build a community that are like-minded around your project.

Note from Darren: it’s worth nothing that many social media sites (like Twitter) use no follow tags on links which means the links don’t really help with SEO. Having said this - it’s still worth getting pages for your keywords/brand as these pages can rank in and of themselves in Google and can help you to have control over numerous search results for the same keyword.

5. Misc Sites

Squidoo is a community website that allows people to create pages (called “lenses”) on various topics. Creating a topic that is related to your blog and then including your feed in that page would help your blog get indexed by Search Engines. Squidoo used to have a really good ranking in Google results, but not so much today. But it’s still ranks well and it shouldn’t be neglected.

ChangeDetection is a website that monitors sites for changes. When you monitor a particular site using ChangeDetection, it will ask you whether you want the notices to be public or private. If you say public, it will be published in their news section. For example; AdesBlog.com got an update today, type of update: text additions etc. This of course will get picked up by Search Engines and Search Engines in return will index your blog.

Technorati is a search engine for searching blogs. According to Wikipedia, as of June 2008, Technorati was indexing 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media. It’s a dying breed, but not just dead yet. You have to definitely register for an account and get your blog listed on Technorati.

That’s it. Once you are done with creating accounts and submitting your newly launched blog in the above mentioned sites, you should see your blog in Google’s Search Results within 24 hours. Most of the time it will appear within the next few hours only.

Lastly, getting indexed is one thing but sustaining that traffic is another. And this is where the Content is King phrase should truly be emphasized. Because, without a good and valuable content, all your effort will be just wasted.

I hope you have found this post useful.

How To Increase Your Traffic Starting Yesterday

If your reason on the Internet is for business and profit then you need to read this.

To fully integrate all of these words into a successful merging you will need another word. TRAFFIC. Traffic is the magic that turns business into a profit making adventure on the Internet. Every article you will find about making your site or company successful would always include the importance of generating traffic.

So, we all know that in the core of it all, traffic is the most essential thing to a successful internet based business company. Aside from ensuring that you have a great product to sell, and you have your company’s internal organization well taken core of, it would be time to get to the nitty gritty of things, generating traffic.

If you already have a site and you want think that you're not getting the traffic that you're supposed to be getting, then its time to reconsider. If you are contending in these very competitive business, you should always be a step ahead of your competition, increasing your traffic flow should have been done starting yesterday.

Timing is essential, that’s an old adage known to everyone. But with generating traffic, you should always be on your toes and be a day ahead of everyone. Never think of today and tomorrow as a starting point for making your site traffic laden, it should always have been yesterday.

To help you out in generating more traffic for your site, here are some seven surefire ways to increase your traffic starting from yesterday.

1) Invest in good advertising with search engines

Google’s Adwords and Yahoo’s Overture provide great advertising schemes that are very truly popular and assures great traffic. Although with this surefire way to increase your traffic would cost some money. While some would shy away from spending money to increase traffic, it is imperative in this case to do so because Adwords and Overture is the top surefire way to increase your traffic.

You could see for yourself the success this search engine advertising methods have reaped rewards for so many companies. Lots of site feature these advertising system and many have signed on to reap the benefits. Do not be left behind. Every penny is worth it with using Google and Yahoo’s advertising.

2) Exchange or Trade Links with other sites

With exchanging links with other sites, both of you will benefit from the efforts both of you do to enhance your sites traffic. When one site features another sites link, they could provide one another with the traffic one site generates. The efforts are doubly beneficial because it would seem like both of you are working to generate more traffic. The more links traded with more sites the more traffic could be expected.

3) Use Viral Marketing

Viral marketing allows you to spread the word about your company and product without any costs or if ever low costs only. This is a marketing method that can be quite sneaky; you can attach your company’s name, product or link to a certain media such as a funny video, entertaining game, an interesting article or a gossip or buzz. With this method, people get infected with the creativity and entertainment of the medium that they will pass it on to many people.

4) Search and use proper keywords or keyword phrases for your sites content

Search engines look for certain keywords that they would show in their results page. In doing so, having the right keyword and keyword phrase is a high requirement in ranking in high in search engine results. You could write your own content or you could hire someone to do it for you.

5) Write Articles that can lead traffic to your site

Submit articles to sites that would contain the same subject that your site deals in. If you sell car parts write press releases and articles about cars and car parts. Attach your sites description and services at the end of the article as well as the link.

6) Join forums and form online communities

Capture a market and show your expertise and credibility. When you found a good foundation for your site, people will trust you and your site and will pass on to many people their trust. Traffic will certainly increase because they know that you can provide what they need.

7)Offer newsletters.

If many people know what you are about and your existence is shared with many others, you will find a loyal traffic that can provide you with more traffic by recommendation. If you arouse the curiosity of your customers they would be pushed to help you with your traffic.

Now over to you. How do you increase traffic to your website/blog that is not mentioned here? I guess you should share it with everyone to get to know. I'll be looking froward to read your own ways.

Top 10 Must-Have Apps for a Web Publisher

I am a web publisher. That means that I publish things for others to read, just like any other person in the press, but that I use the internet as my medium. Less red tape. Less committee. Just me, typing my thoughts or findings, and posting them for others to read and respond to.

Now, in this business, you not only need to be able to publish to the web, but you need to also design your site and administrate the business end of it. This takes software and the use of that software at my computer (as the size of my ass can attest to).

So, here is my top 10 list of applications which just make my job oh so much easier as a web publisher.

1. Dreamweaver. Formerly a Macromedia product and now owned by Adobe, Dreamweaver is the best web design program out there as far as I’m concerned. Frontpage  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/frontpage/default.aspx was a piece of crap. I heard Expressions  http://www.microsoft.com/Expression/products/overview.aspx?key=web was better, but I have not personally tried it yet.

2. TopStyle. This is a great CSS editor for Windows.

3. ColorCop. This small little utility is super useful when you need to find out the color code of any color visible on your screen. Want to precisely match a visual element you see on the web? Just grab ColorCop’s pointer to that point, release the mouse cursor, and you have the exact color code.

4. Wordpress. This is, of course, the web-based blogger software of significant popularity. And for good reason. It simply blows the other options away in terms of ease of use and availability of add-ons and community support. A web publisher needs to be able to easily bring content to the web, and it doesn’t get much easier than Wordpress.

5. Gmail. Even though it is a web-based app, I put this one into the must-have category. The joys of using a web-based email client where somebody else makes it work is immeasurable. If you want, you can also hook your domain up to Google Apps https://www.google.com/a/  and get the full Google office suite for your whole domain.

6. Trillian Basic. This is a chat client that can connect to multiple networks. Almost any web publisher is going to need to communicate to others on the web. I personally like Trillian because it can dock to the side of my screen and not move. It seems few others do that, and I have no idea why.

7. Google Desktop. Depending on the size of your website and the number of files you work with, it might get to be an incredibly daunting task to try to find half the crap you SWEAR you saved on your computer. Google Desktops brings the power of Google search to your file system. And it does work. It uses a pretty small footprint in Windows, so it won’t slow you down. And, no, using Google Desktop does not mean that Google is indexing all your files on their servers.

8. Camtasia Studio 4. If you want to make screencasting videos for the web, Camtasia is the defacto standard. And their video editor isn’t half bad either.

9. Google Reader. Again, web-based, but any publisher online needs to stay up-to-date with what others are talking about. It is the only way you can remain current and relevant to your community. Google Reader is an excellent way to bring content to you from RSS feeds. Subscribe to relevant sites and easily keep track of them. It is a huge time saver. And I like how you can read your feeds from your cell phone if you have some time to kill somewhere without a full computer around.

10. Yahoo Music Jukebox. Sitting on the computer all day means you might need some entertainment while you work. My personal fave is Yahoo Music Jukebox. While the streaming media service is not free, it does offer an endless supply of music of any genre I want. I can also play particular albums or artists to suit my mood. Great to work with.

So, what other apps might you recommend?

Twitter by Nigerians for the World

naijapulse-logo

I had to come back home to write about the rave of the moment. I have been on it and for a while. I linked my NaijaPulse account with my Twitter account with my Facebook account..Well, lets get to the business of the day..

NaijaPulse is Africa’s first microblogging service just like twitter which was launched some days ago which lets users say what they’re doing, start or follow a discussion, share a link or news item, join or create groups. The service runs on the Laconica microblogging software, version 0.7.1.

The service lets you share short text updates about yourself and what is happening around you with friends, colleagues, family and fans. NaijaPulse lets you say ‘Wetin Dey Happen’ (which is a pidgin phrase for ‘What’s Happenning?’).

What are the features?

Unlike Twitter, the site allows you to create groups, features users and has a link for popular posts. If you favour a post, it will be featured as a POPULAR on the right sidebar. You can also tag a word by preceding it with the hashtag (#). For example, tagging me (adesojiadegbulu) will be @adesojiadegbulu.

You can link your NaijaPulse account to your Twitter account, After linking, all your ‘pulses’ are automatically published at Twitter as well. You can use the ‘connect’ tab on your NaijaPulse account profile and provide the login data to your twitter account so that your updates are posted automatically. But, wouldn’t NaijaPulse have access to your twitter account? I doubt, since the login details are sent directly through the server, so no one can have access to your information.

NaijaPulse also allows you to send direct messages to other naijapulse users, as long as both of you are subscribed to the RSS feeds of each other. You can also connect to your Twitter account and Facebook account.

What is unique?

NaijaPulse supports OpenMicroBlogging 0.1., a protocol that lets users of one microblogging service subscribe to updates by users of another service. What this means is that, if you use any other microblogging service such as Twitter, you subscribe to pulses from another user on NaijaPulse.

Thus, if you have an account on a remote site that supports OpenMicroBlogging, and you want to subscribe to the pulses of a user on NaijaPulse, you can click on the “Subscribe” link under their avatar on their profile page. This should take you to the remote subscription page, where you enter your profile URL on the other microblogging service.

You’ll be taken to your microblogging service, where you’ll be asked to confirm the subscription. When you confirm, your service will receive new notifications from the user on NaijaPulse, and your service will forward them to you (using IM, SMS, the Web, or whatever else).

My Opinion

I like the idea of the site, but I’m concerned if the site would develop to become a useful tool for business just like Twitter has become for most companies around the world.

Obviously, Nigerian web addicts like me are already using Twitter and soon, my guess is that businesses will be using microblogging services like NaijaPulse. However, for this to happen, NaijaPulse must generate a lot of buzz about their service in order to experience a significant growth, and thus position itself as a useful business tool for interacting with customers and clients.

I’m yet to see if NaijaPulse would make a huge impression in the African continent, since the site’s concept seems too niched and tends to focus on the Nigerian online community. Besides, the name (definitely not pan-African) doesn’t suggest that the site would capture the African social media space just like sites like South African-based start-ups, Afrigator and Muti have attracted a lot of attention from the African blogging community.

Perhaps the site would have been called AfriTwit or so in order to attract the entire African microblogging community? Even if it looks and feels pan-African, it will still need to have multiple language preferences like French and Arabic.

...culled from Startup Africa.

Bad Lesson about Monetization taught by Twitter

We all love Twitter. I do. I use it all day and I’ve built up connections with people using it. But, one thing is for sure: Twitter is STUPID when it comes to how to make any money. Bloggers, pay attention!

Twitter has grown a lot (biggest understatement of the century). Throughout, the question of how they’re going to make any money is discussed frequently. They are raising a little money through investors and it is keeping them going. But, Twitter is a sitting goldmine and the fact that they’re not making any real money yet is idiocy on full display.

In my view, Twitter has several ways to make money. Most obvious to me would be the “freemium” model. Obviously, they cannot begin charging for Twitter accounts as it would completely kill the network. However, they can begin to charge a yearly premium to users who CHOOSE to do so. In exchange, a “Twitter Pro” user would get things like additional API calls, exemption from ads, an increase in SMS access, ability to follow more than 2,000 people. Yes, it would be dependent on Twitter running ads on the network as well as limiting SMS access (which I’m sure costs them money).

Twitter could easily embed ads into the site. Contextual ads based on the keywords in your own tweets and the people you follow. The ads could either be on the side or (better yet) injected into your Twitter stream. As long as they don’t overdo it and and make it obvious that a tweet is an ad or not, I think it will work fine. Then, they could use the “freemium” model to provide an opt-out.

Now, I’ll go on record and say that I expect something like this to happen in 2009. It is only a matter of time.

But, what is taking them so long? And what can bloggers learn from it?
Well, the fact that Twitter is sitting on this so long is the lesson for bloggers. In other words, DON’T DO THAT!

Last week, I answered the question on when I thought was the right time to monetize. My answer is: NOW. Twitter violated that and now look where they are. They’re all worried that the first thing they do to make money is going to alienate their user base. If they had done something in the early days, the Twitter community would be used to it by now. It would be a non-issue.

So, the lesson that I believe Twitter can teach aspiring pro bloggers is:

Don’t wait around! Monetize early and don’t wait until you have a humongous user base that you are afraid will react badly when you monetize too late in the game.

If you are confused on how to monetize, here’s some ideas.

Twitter is a goldmine. It is an entrepreneurial tragedy that it still isn’t making any money. I expect they’ll grow a brain sometime this year. However, in the meantime, don’t repeat their mistake.

Note: This post was originally titled "What Twitter Can Teach Bloggers about Monetization
[In a Bad Way]" but changed to what it is now in order to fit this blog.

How to Use Web Analytics to Grow Your Business

If you own a business, chances are you do. But don't pat yourself on the back too quickly.

By now it's widely-accepted that if you have a business card you should probably have a website. It doesn't matter what your company is selling - a website, however modest, has become a standard.

The real question is: what is your website doing for your business?
As a web marketer I often put this question to the business owners I meet. Not because I'm trying to lead into my sales pitch, but because I'm intrigued to hear the answer.

Most people get a certain "deer in the headlights" look in their eyes when I ask this question. To be fair, it's not a question we're used to hearing. But that's not all that's going on here.

Traditional advertising mediums - print, TV, radio, etc - are notoriously difficult to track. Sure, you'll know how often the phone is ringing or how many people come in with a coupon clipped from the Sunday paper, but what you don't know is how many people saw/heard your ad and whether they were interested, oblivious or, worse, annoyed.

Business owners are used to this. We all know we need to advertise - it's a necessary cost of doing business - so we buy that half-page ad in the Yellow Pages or the local newspaper, we sponsor an event or a little league team, we have a radio commercial written (maybe even with a jingle) and we hope for the best.

This has been a given in marketing since the beginning. But the web, and analytics, changed the game.

So how should you be using your web analytics to grow your audience, and your business, online?

Track Everything

With web analytics on your site you can track:
  • Where your traffic is coming from by
       - The referring website and page
       - The search engine and keyword used

  • Your website visitors by
       - Their location
       - Their operating system, browser and monitor resolution
       - Their network

  • Visitor behavior and actions by
       - Duration of visit (time on site)
       - Pages per visit (number of pages viewed)
       - Bounce rate (percentage of users who viewed only one page before leaving)
       - Conversion rate (percentage of users who completed a preset task)

If you're planning on doing any kind of web marketing, be it through search engines, email or advertising on other websites, information on your past and current traffic is crucial. Not to mention you'll want analytics in place so you can properly track the new traffic your promotions will, hopefully, bring in.

Tie Your Traffic Sources to Your Users' Actions

When looking at your analytics data the behavior and action metrics mean little by themselves. If the bounce rate of your site overall is 75%, what does that tell you? Well, this is a pretty high bounce rate - you should at least be shooting to have a bounce rate lower than 50%. But does this tell you exactly what is wrong?

Likewise, if you have secured advertising or a listing on another website, the number of visits coming in from that site only gives you part of the picture.

Tying your bounce rate to a specific traffic source, on the other hand, can tell you a lot.

If a given traffic source is generating a bounce rate of 85% or more, for example, this indicates that users are not being satisfied. There are a few possibilities as to why:

  • The users may not be well-qualified - or the site where you are listed or advertising might not have the best audience for your content/offer.

  • The listing/ad may promise something that the entry page does not live up to (or, at least, the promise is difficult to locate once the user arrives at your site).

  • Your site is simply not usable, is unattractive or unprofessional, causing users to leave immediately (and most don't come back)

  • Your users are not connecting with your content/offer.

There are other possibilities, but you'll want to find the most likely answer here - and try to fix it. Then, using the same metrics (traffic source + bounce rate), you can see whether things improve moving forward.

Using metrics like these you can also get a sense of which advertisements are bringing you a return on your investment and which aren't. With goal tracking in Google Analytics, for example, a conversion rate is added to just about every traffic metric, including referring websites. If you're finding that a website is sending you plenty of traffic but none of it is converting, re-examine the referring website's audience, how your site is being presented and the user's experience when they click through.

The Point

Your website is more than a brochure. It's an interactive tool for your users. The only true way to find out how they're using it (or not using it) is to get web analytics set up properly on your website (including setting goal points to track conversions).

And the best way to improve your website in the aim of building your business is to use the information your web analytics give you.

The age of blind advertising - of throwing money at the problem and hoping for the best - is dead.

If you aren't tracking everything, taking time on a regular basis to understand what the data reveals about your users and adjusting your efforts based on this information, you're missing an opportunity to optimize your advertising and get a better return on your budget.

In this economy, is that something you can afford?

Adsense and Keywords

I need to start with an analogy to explain the importance of keywords. Your selection of keywords is the ‘heart of your business’ as far as adsense income is determined. The heart, yes the most important organ of your body, not your leg or your wrist, but your heart. If your heart is failing, putting a bandage on your wrist isn’t going to work.

So here is the crunch… If your adsense income has dropped or you need to build an adsense business, then look after your heart. It is the life blood of the system, it pumps the money into your adsense account.

It has taken a few hard lessons for me to understand this principle. This is how I felt the pump, pump, pump send a light bulb moment to my brain. It started when the town I live in lost the internet connection. Phew… I’m sure that everyone has lost a connection for as little as ten minutes and thought their world had ended. But I lost the internet connection for three days. I got on with other stuff as you do, but what I did do is re-read some of the books I had purchased.

Of course, years on from getting more knowledge, to re-read an ebook generally is boring; and most of it was, but I kept stumbling, pausing and contemplating on the keyword section of the ebooks. If keywords are the heart of a business you need to dedicate more time and effort to keep them healthy.

If you are starting out, use the system below. If you already have adsense websites and the income has dropped, you need to be aware that trends change and the keyword you chose a year ago may not be the major one being searched for today. Go through this procedure and add another 250 pages.

We all use the keyword tools available and knock up a 5,000 keyword list in half an hour, spend another hour sifting through and choosing our prime keywords. That’s it we’re done. But… would you take an hour and a half to mould and create a heart and expect to live beyond a few months?

Once your website is up and running, I would guess you must spend 2 or 3 hours a day trying to get traffic to your website. This effort could be a little wasted if your keyword choice is hurried.

Here is the best way to choose keywords to maximize your search engine positions. Let’s assume that you need 250 keywords. Up to 50 of those should be first tier. These should include all the main associated keywords and most important should be ‘high’ paying keywords too. These you can check through either the free Google Keyword Tool or through varying software keyword tools.

These first 50 keywords will be the fiercely competed words and as a consequence you’ll not rank very high for them initially. Yet long term, the optimization, the blogs, social networking and bookmarking should help rise those 50 web pages nearer the top of the search rankings.

The other 200 keywords you choose will be ‘long tail keywords’. You may start with a 1,000 to sift through to finish up with 200. First you need to check each keyword separately. Allocate a day to do this, because the effort you put in now will serve you well. The purpose of checking as I’m going to mention is so that you get onto the front page of Google as soon as the search engines crawl your deep inside pages.

The first thing to check is if that long tail keyword gets traffic each month. Between 50 to 500 hits per month is fine for long tail keywords. Above those hits per month and you’ll probably find that too many other websites are competing for that keyword. Below that amount and you may find the quantity of hits vary from a few hits a month to zero hits.

Once you have a selection that meet the first criteria, then you need to check the competing sites. Is there 2,000 or is there 8? To do this you need to put this search query into Google - inurl:my-keywords - replacing my-keywords with your own of course. Use both variations, with dashes separating the words and without dashes. Make a note of the total of competing websites. Once you gone through them all you can make a decision on which keywords are going to get you on the front page of Google.

Even if your web page isn’t optimized too well, if there are only 8 competing websites, you’ll appear on the front page. This will mean a steady but small flow of traffic 50 to 500 hits per month. Multiply that by the sites with long tail keywords and the minimum you could expect, once the search engines have listed the inner pages, is 200 x 50 = 10,000.

There are also other options to consider if you are adding web pages slowly. Use in the Google search box “allintitle: and allinanchor: keyword”. Extra work, but will pay off in the long run.

A reasonable time limit to expect all 250 pages listed in Google, so long as you’ve done the necessary blogging or bookmarking, should be 4 to 6 weeks; it can be done quicker but more work is involved.

Don’t just rely on Google, you’ll need to submit your site to other major engines as well. Plus if you are by chance one of eight on that first Google page, you’ll need to make sure that your description tag is better than all the other tags on that Google page, as they often use that tag to display to content of the site.

10,000 possible hits per month within the first 10 weeks, not bad for a beginner… Realistically if you shared that with the other sites, you may only get 2,000 visitors enter your site per month, but that is still good. Of course… the visitor who clicks your web site link is relatively targeted by this stage and your conversion rate for clicking on adsense ads could be between 10 to 20%. 10% of 2,000 clicks is 200, which could be worth $50 to $200. The day’s work you spent on sifting these keywords has paid for itself. Then you can expect more of the same the following month. As many adsense professionals have 5 to 20 websites, multiply the expected earning by the websites and suddenly you can see the potential, and I may add this is before you start trying to get traffic. Glory days… if you get the job done right.

Does Your Web Site Have Trust-ability and Credibility?

Have you ever visited a web site and been attacked by screaming pop-up ads, gotten lost in a clutter of banner ads, had things flash and go boom? And have you ever visited a site that was informative, easy to navigate and generally pleasant to peruse?

Which site gained your trust? Which site would you revisit? The more user-friendly building tools you use on your site, the more trust will be developed with your viewers. With this in mind, here are expert tips for making your online store trustworthy…

Purchase an appropriate domain name.
Paying for your own domain name builds trust and is professional looking. Your own domain name will be - free of all advertisements (except products you sell or recommend). You want to sell your visitors on the content of your site - not the products of other advertisers.

Use your domain name email addresses
When searching for a host for your site, look for packages that include POP3 accounts and NOT alias accounts. This will enable you to send email from your site (you@yourbusiness.com), which looks much more professional than you@freeemailaccount.com. It is easier to trust someone who has evidently made an investment in his or her business.

Include contact information
Provide phone numbers, hours of operation (including time zone), a business mailing address and an email address. PO Boxes are not considered addresses. Many companies won’t deliver to PO Boxes, and many visitors won’t purchase from you if you use one. Work from home? Add a suite or building number to your home/apartment. Or use a mail forwarding service for a real address.

Add contact links.
Place at least one way for your visitors to contact you on each page and place your Webmaster’s contact information on at least the bottom of the front page. This way your visitors can request information from you, and if there is a problem with your site, they can write to the Webmaster. Even if you and the Webmaster are the same person, place the Webmaster’s email address on the site.

Watch your dates.
People prefer to see a current copyright date on the bottom of sites. Some web sites also carry a “last updated” dates. Are your dates current?

Include a personal touch.
Provide an “About Me/Us” page. Provide the names of the owner, president, executives, and staff on the contact page. Include individual and group pictures, small biographies if relevant, and email addresses where they can be quickly contacted. Don’t make it look as though your site’s owners want to be anonymous, which obviously generates suspicions.

Avoid “enter”, “enter here” and splash screens.
Do you have an “Enter page” or splash screen on the front of your site? If so, delete it now! You will lose visitors who want information quickly because they’ll go to a rival site instead. Worse than an enter page is an enter page that forces someone to download a program such as Flash. If you want to use the option of Flash pages, fancy pointers etc., give visitors the option of
viewing them. Don’t force them to download any programs.

Cater to everyone
Include alt = ” ” tags with your images to assist those with sight disabilities and the hundreds of thousands of people all over the world who use library-based text-only computer software and Web
browsers.

Make it quick.
Ensure that your pages load in less then 20 seconds with a 56K modem and 7 seconds using DSL. Most visitors will not have the patience to stick around much longer than that and will simply move on. A site that loads quickly and is neatly designed, will show that you are a professional company. It will also boost confidence in your potential buyers.

Get recommendations.
Ask your clients for testimonials and permission to use their whole name on your Web site. If they don’t feel comfortable doing so, find others who will.

Link it. Make sure that all the links within your site or to other web sites are working. Download a links checker and use it monthly. Sometimes you’ll find that you’ve linked within your site to a page you’ve moved or removed. Other times you’ll find that pages outside your site have disappeared or are changed. Ask your Web Designer to design an interesting “error” page that will allow your visitors to get back on track if a page they bookmarked no longer exists.

Spell it right.
If you want your site to be as professional as it can be, put each page through a spell checker or hire an excellent proof reader. Don’t underestimate the value of a properly spelled site.

Provide guarantees.
If you have a money back guarantee on your service or product, say so. If you don’t, say what you do provide. Do guarantees include or exclude returning the shipping or handling fees? How about a privacy policy for your newsletter ailing list or code of ethics? Clearly place any type of guarantee on your site.

Secure purchases.
The best sites provide the most secure purchase program available. This includes a secure server, secure gateway, and information that informs you that your purchase is as secure as is currently possible. Make sure you offer your customers secure purchases. If you don’t they will (and should) shop elsewhere.

Don’t clutter the site.
Use lots of white space to “break” up the text. It’s easier on the eyes that way. The only place to NOT use lots of white space is on the top of your pages.

Watch your fonts.
Save the fancy font types for special items or graphics. Arial and Veranda work well on sites, Times Roman does not.

Drop it.
Eliminate the pop-ups, pop-unders, banners that wave or go blinkity-blink all the time.

View it,
Ask people to go to your site. Now without scrolling, ask them how they know what your business is about. If they can’t figure it out, fix this.

How To Get Top Search Engine Rankings In Your Video Marketing

In order for you to get your videos to rank high on the search engines, you will need to do a bit of market and keyword research. “But that’s boring!” Well, to some people it will be boring, but if you do the work once, you may be able to multiply your business in size overnight. With one of my local businesses, I did my video marketing so well that some people couldn’t find any of my competitors when searching on the internet.

They could only find me and my videos! In this instance, my business really did multiply in size overnight. So doing your market and keyword research will pay off. So, for your video marketing you will need to use one of the various keyword research tools that are available to you across the web. The best keyword research tools are the ones that will give you an estimate of the number of searches your keyword phrases gets each month.

You have to realize that you are NOT going to get a top 10 ranking with your video for keyword phrases that are searched thousands of times each day. The secret to search engine rankings with your videos will be to target less competitive keyword phrases. You will want to go for the #1 and #2 spots for less competitive long-tailed keywords.

At first you will want to get these spots for keywords that may only get 5 or 10 searches each day. This can be fairly easy to do since you may be the only person on the web who has optimized a video/web page/ or article for that keyword phrase. After you get your feet wet with the easier keyword phrases, you will then want to try and get top 10 rankings for a number of different phrases that get even more searches.

So here’s step #1 Pick your target keyword phrase

Once you have picked this target keyword phrase, you will want to then pick other relevant keyword phrases that you can include as tags for your video. For most video sharing sites, you will be allowed to provide about 6 tags, and this will be plenty in order to optimize your video. Have your target keyword phrase be one of your tags and make sure your other 5 tags are very similar.

Step #2 Create the perfect title

One of the main reasons that this can be so difficult is because you want to have your best keyword phrases in the title, you want your title to be appealing to viewers, and you can only make your title a certain length on many video sharing sites. Here’s how to make this work: You will at least want your target keyword phrase somewhere in the title. It is easy to do this once, but it is hard to include it a second time while still making the video title sound great. Sometimes what works the best is to include your target keyword phrase along with the other similar keywords you have made into tags.

In order to make your title appealing to viewers, you will want to study great headlines that capture your attention. Many of the most effective headlines include a “how to” approach and include a benefit. Using my article title as an example, you can see that I use the “how to” approach to catch my reader’s attention. The benefit included in my title is that you can get your videos ranked high in the search engines. You wouldn’t be reading this article, if you didn’t want to obtain that benefit.

Step #3 Create a great description for your videos

Video sharing sites and the search engines appreciate good descriptions because it’s one of the only things they can use to rank your videos. Since you want to build links across the web and eventually have your video viewers visit your site, you will want to include your website at the beginning of the description. You will then proceed to create a description which will include some of the keyword phrases that you are using to optimize your video. Keep in mind that you are writing this description for a human rather than a robot. It is possible to include great keywords in your descriptions while still making it easy to read. Don’t mess up by overdoing things and giving your viewers the impression that you have made this video just to rank high in the searches.

Step #4 is to upload your videos to various video sharing sites

There are software programs that you can use that will allow you to upload each video to multiple sites instead of one. This not only will give your videos more exposure on other popular sites, but it has also been proven to get your videos ranked higher. For example, your video may not get a top ranking that was put on YouTube, but that same video may get the top ranking because it became extremely popular on a site like Revver.

Our final step is to continue to make videos

Even if you follow all of these steps perfectly, your video may still never make it to the top. But, if you make a few videos that are similar but different, that target the same keyword phrases, then that video might eventually make it to the top. I have videos that have thousands of views that aren’t optimized very well. I also have videos that are optimized “perfectly” for the search engines that don’t get nearly as many views. The trick here is that you really never know when your video will climb to the top, so optimize correctly to better your chances of making it to the top, and then continue to create more videos because the more you make, the more exposure you will get for you and your business.

Link Building and SEO: Using Sitemaps and Tags

Based on your sites architecture, internal and external links, search engines create a profile of how each correlates and interacts with the other to map out which pages have the highest significance to their index.

This principle is known as link equity and fortunately for webmasters, link weight and link equity can be sculpted to benefit sub directories, individual pages or sub domains for enhanced visibility in search engines.

We will in theory be covering a less publicized SEO technique for SEO through building links to tags and sitemaps to shift link weight throughout your site. Particularly when you are dealing with a series of strong inbound links such as site-wide links (links from every page in another site or a blog roll).

Tags are implemented to create categorization of consolidated information which serves to create a common theme for posts and pages in your site. In addition to tags, sitemaps are also implemented frequently to consolidate vast sites with depth to a manageable means. In this post, we will discuss how you can use both to make your website more robust in search engines “specifically for long tail or broad match phrases”.

Naturally things like using the “no-follow” tag, using embedding links in java script so they are user-friendly for humans but unavailable for search engines (to add significance to) is one way to sculpt the way link juice moves around your pages, but what about using external links strategically to add the perfect icing on the cake?

Which page will rank higher, a page with 100 inbound links from within your site or a page with no internal or external links? Inbound links (IBL) are a metric that create a signature and an accommodating effect for where they congregate. This facet of link popularity is what distinguishes your lackluster from blockbuster pages that really stand out to funnel relevant traffic to your site.

What if you opened the funnel even more by adding more traffic-bearing pages to your sites profile systemically? If the concept is appealing, then use the simple tip of building links to your sitemaps or tags (if you utilize a content management system) to strengthen any affiliated pages joined by them.

It is not uncommon for each subfolder to implement xml sitemaps for the sake of cataloging the contents of that folder. So why not take it one step further and use it as a spine which can dispense the full power of an inbound links potential by giving it multiple target pages to saturate.

It is also important to note that by using this technique, you may wish to set your meta tags to no index, follow (which means you do not want your sitemaps outranking key pages in the index, but you are indicating that the links should be followed).

One obvious benefit is pages that barely made the grade (as far as link popularity) now gain expression and are able to rank on their title tag alone, or the combination of a description tag and a few keywords from the content in the body of the page are now enough to produce a top 10 ranking for a long tail search. Get enough top 10 results for any given query and search engines will promote your website as an authority.

So, just because reaping the reward of plucking the low hanging fruit as far as keywords go, may not have been your original intention, why waste latent potential from lack of expression. So, what is the technique?

Simply link to your tag pages index.php?tagname or rename your sitemap to something else other than sitemap such as keyword-resource.html or keyword-resource.xml and then use that as the target page to build links to equivocally ramp up every page that is linked using the tags or the sitemap.

This simple but effective method can bring languishing pages to the forefront to test their mettle for keyword worthiness. If you find some pages have a great hook and get more traffic than others, then you know which new keywords to develop more content for as well as build strong internal link silos to gain even more relevant traffic to your pages.

Search Engine Optimization Concepts

Sometimes another form of language and imagery is required in order to communicate vast ideas for common consumption. This is one of such instances where an array of algorithmic functions will be given a conceptual vehicle to map their role in the creation of a top 10 ranking.

Since the concept of the universe is a great model, we will borrow concepts originating from planetary forces ranging to universal phenomenon like gravity, orbits, the concept of the internet being a giant nebula of computers sharing virtual space and employing data retrieval, etc. Bear in mind, this is only an interpretation.

If you can visualize your website as a dot and each keyword as its own orbiting sphere of concentric influence, you have to create a series of eventful transactions (like creating content over time, building links, having a supportive format for internal linking http://www.seodesignsolutions.com/blog/seo-web-design/internal-links-are-you-making-the-most-of-yours/ ) that classify and elevate your website as a candidate for relevance within the center of the sphere of influence for that keyword.

By viewing each keyword as a cumulative objective (like peeling away the layers of an onion) once you reach the center, your site radiates a beacon in all directions whenever a broad match http://www.seodesignsolutions.com/blog/internet-marketing/exact-match-is-nice-but-with-key-phrases-think-unique/ or more general search is conducted with those keywords as search queries.
When you first start a website, since the site is empty your relevance is also at zero. As you continue to add content to your site (like filling up a glass with liquid) the site begins to take on a particular persona based upon what content is contained within the site.

As a result, your site creates its own orbit and gravitational pull where the content and subjects traversed within the context of your pages become beacons that attract similar orbiting keywords, concepts and semantic variations.

The analogies presented are to elaborate on the function of search engine algorithms which essentially consolidate each site into a type of conical tube that best describes the subject matter it contains. Then based on the vacuum created when someone actually invokes those qualities (through a linear search) the search bridges the gap and projects through all of the other spheres of influence (from the web) to extract the most relevant pieces of data and reformats them for communication via retrieval.

In order to appear as the most relevant result, your site must have enough supporting relevance from external clusters (others sites) that also contain the same type of data cloud (a collective summary of the sites content) which can change forms (like a liquid to a gas, a gas to a solid) and act as a homing signal to create continuity between its own orbit (on the micro level) and serve as a piece of the puzzle for the main theme in the index (as a part of the whole like a planet in the solar system, which belongs to a galaxy, etc.).

The Job of search engines is to be able to index, retrieve and create order from all of the orbits created from each websites signature as it occupies the cloud of online space (data shared across multiple servers), gauge a metric and then determine the usefulness of the metric and how it applies to a query (which like a vacuum) is seeking the most relevant result.

Just think of a search as pure potential that does not exist until executed, then on assembly its purpose is to seek out the most likely orbit (website) using the nebulous data cloud (the web) to bridge the gap using a vacuum that through traversing aggregate links and other sites (through assessing their relevance score) until it finds the most suitable supporting environment.

If you can use this visual map as a blueprint, then you understand that rankings are all a result of how strong the broadcast signal is, signal strength in this capacity is based on relevance, continuity and popularity. In order to produce a ranking of such magnitude (such as a competitive keyword) you must move from the outermost bounds of the keywords sphere of influence, into its center to attain the top ranking result.
The stages involved are research, planning, execution, testing, refinement, collaboration and strategy.

If any of the steps are excluded in does not mean you still cannot create top 10 placement for your website, it is just that if reproducing the phenomenon is important to you, then understanding the proper chronology and strategy behind the tactics should concern you. For example, topical relevance, site synergy / persona, authority and orderliness all impact placement for your website.

1) Research - You need to research the appropriate keywords to develop the appropriate gravity in your own site to attract the search engines crawlers (who index the content and include the site approximation of relevance score).

2) Planning - After finding your semantic base, create topical fields of information (multiple keyword-rich pages) within the site (using a content management system) or supporting site architecture. If search engines cannot retrieve the data (based on crawling errors from bots, poor site architecture or otherwise) then you is automatically excluded from participating with other forms of life contained in digital space (the web).

3) Execution - Build links, either through internal linking (if you have an authority site that is enough) or through external links from other sites (data clusters with relevance) that have similar signatures containing the topical relevance shared by your own site.
The closer the relevance between things like (a) is the site from the same industry or niche (b) is there related content between the sites (c) what keywords are used to link to and from the two sites (the vacuum) and (d) where each site resides in the overall relevance model for each of the overlapping keywords they both share, gives the target site the opportunity to receive a jolt of authority through osmosis and synergistic infusion. The bottom line is the quality of the links, but topical relevance also add even more weight to the orbit of the site receiving the link from an external site.

4) Testing - Test the results, ping the site from using a beacon in the nebula, use a search engine to determine how close to the center of the keywords your site has become. If you targeted 10 keywords for example and dedicated an ample amount of time, effort and energy to build a coherent series of pages on the site, created strong internal linking and then found at least 5 sources for links to each page (with a wide array of IP diversity) in other words not from the same series of sites, then you should have created enough orbital relevance as well as made a strong impression on the ethers in the data cloud (your sites algorithmic counterpart) to appear as a relevant result.

5) Refinement - If your website did not make the grade (is not ranking yet) then you can always (1) wait for all of the factors to settle a bit more and then re-evaluate the keyword saturation (2) build more content and shore up your main subject or subjects or (3) look for other sites with authority that can augment your sites reputation online (in the nebulous data cloud known as the web).

6) Collaboration - Moving a website closer to the center of a series of keywords requires understanding. You need to know that each time you add a page or a link it changes (1) the sites internal topical relevance and orbit / signature and (2) how other sites and keywords within the web react to it based on the search engines algorithm. The translation here is, by viewing each keyword as a cumulative apex, you can set in motion a series of events to create a chain reaction to close the gap for those keywords.

More competitive phrases may take many months to a year or more, other phrases in the nebula (the web) may only take a few hours or a few days at best to acquire. The point being, your websites orbit is entirely up to you, how others link to it and the collective blueprint it leaves on its environment in the nebula however is another part of the equation that you have to sculpt over time through releasing consistent information on a topic to reinforce the basis of its existence.

7) Strategy - the strategy is simple, rank for as many keywords that either funnel relevant traffic to your site or overlap with a series of other keywords that have latent potential down the road. The web is all about multiple layers overlapping and linking through internalization and expression. These two dynamic attributes are responsible for moving from site to site or from page to page within a website. Depending on your ability to see beyond the immediate goal (which is to create relevance) the real goal is to create a hub where your site literally overlaps with thousands of keywords and then refines each branch to delve deep into the long-tail http://www.seodesignsolutions.com/blog/articles/reviving-the-long-tail-of-seo/ as well as hit the high notes with the most sought after two word phrases as well.

By using the concepts such as topical relevance, gravity, orbit, continuity, the query-based vacuum, the nebulous data cloud and information retrieval in a way that anyone can understand, creating a systemic method for creating relevance is a byproduct which means multiple top 10 rankings to claim as trophies that increase website traffic.

Top Blog Directories to Submit Your Blog To

Do you have a blog, then you can count yourself among the thousands of other people on earth who have a blog, who can sell their products and services online, and who find ways to network through friends, former classmates, relatives, even acquaintances, in order to make more money. There are thousands upon thousands of blogs on the Internet right now, and you will need to shine through the muddle of language, or, at the very least, be known to a few well enough in whatever niche you choose to place yourself.

One way for you to establish your audience is to actually have a niche that you proclaim yourself to be in, and one way for you to do this is to place your blog address in a blog directory. You also have the pick of the litter: you are not limited to placing your blog in a single directory, which is advantageous if you consider how these blog directories have their own audiences whom you might lose if you aren’t meticulous enough.

If you are interested in submitting your blog to a blog directory, make sure that your blog is ready for the viewing. Do not simply place your blog address and then expect people to read half-baked essays, poor stories, or no entries at all. Have a lot of good content to welcome your new and current readers. Moreover, be aware of exactly what keywords your blog will have.

This means that you will have to go through your content, and then evaluate what keywords to use, so that you can properly categorize your blog and then provide the right keywords if the blog directory service asks for it.

Here are some blog directories that you may want to consider when you are finally ready to sign your blog up.

1. Blog Catalog allows you to not only place your blog into a category. It also shows which categories are the most popular, so that you can be better guided as to what market has the biggest readers. Through blog catalog, you can join discussions and form or join groups.

2. At Blog Hub, you can add your blog and chat at a forum, chat with your fellow bloggers, and get news on affordable web hosting services, as well as other articles that might be of interest to you. Blog hub also offers information on how to use services to monetize your blog.

3. You can also add your blog to the directory at Blog Hint, where you can view the latest blogs added, the most popular, and the highest rated. Blog Hints will even suggest a category for your blog, and you can access some Wordpress themes if you are using that service. There are many different blogs in this directory that you can search through. The blogs are also arranged in folders that are readily visible on the front page of the site.

4. At Blogging Fusion you can also readily view the available categories, and you can even get your blog featured. There are also available blog ratings systems and popular blogs lists for you to browse.

5. Another directory is Blog Flux where you can look through an alphabetical directory, see featured blogs, and see the latest updates to blogs listed in the directory.

Twitter Metrics

WHEN I first heard of Twitter, I thought about it much like many of you probably still do. It’s just noise. Who needs to know when someone is having a pizza?

But I’ve had a few epiphanies along the way that have changed my thinking. The general background is on my professional blog with link above, so I won’t repeat it here. I also posted a piece on myFastcompany.com blog. The bottom line for me is that Twitter is a great news source, a great place for learning about social networking and a great place for tracking general noise in the blogosphere, whether it is about you, your company, your competitors or any topic of general interest. If it is worthwhile, someone will be tweeting about it. And the noise level behind something is a good indicator of general interest.

There are two major things that you can do right now via Twitter from a metrics standpoint. The first is, measure what is happening with your tweets. The second is, what is the noise about your clients?

Using Twinfluence.com, one can get the equivalent of a research run, showing reach, velocity and social capital of leading Tweeters. Barak Obama shows up with the most “reach” (followers and their connections at one degree) at over 15MM. However, he has not sent a message since the famous post-election victory declaration and now the question is whether in fact it was him or his PR machine. Blogger Jason Calacanis is #2 with over 13.5MM “reach”. Due to a factor called retweeting, Twinfluence rationalizes that the followers of followers could quickly be reached through an important message being forwarded or retweeted. In fact, many of the rankings of importance of Tweeters take retweeting into account. (When they retweet you, your ranking goes up).

Some other metric companies include TweetRush, which can give you an idea about the total volume (running about 300k people per day with about 5 Tweets per person); Tweetlists, which shows the most popular “conversations”; TweetVolume, where you can find the volume of a word or brand; TwitterGrader, which measures your rank (happy to say I am in the top 5% based on reach and authority); and Twitterrank, which for some reason does not rank me as high as TwitterGrader. (By the way, my Twitter address is mediadls.)

As mentioned above, another major use of Twitter is following noise about clients and client campaigns, as well as your own company. The easiest way to follow the noise about your client is Twitter search, which is search.twitter.com. Type in your company, a client’s company or a competitor and see what the chatter is. If you click on the advanced text link, you can add keywords to do with a campaign or many other factors. In fact, when the rockets started shooting from Gaza, I searched for “within 150 miles of Gaza.” Very interesting to see the tweets from both Gaza and Tel Aviv on one page. This parsing of Twitter is key to the future here.

In the future, we should be able to measure the metrics of individuals on Twitter and understand how much traffic they are getting, setting up the potential of an Adwords-type situation where the writer and Twitter share in revenue. We should also be able to do the same for individual topics written about, thus facilitating keyword advertising. Technologies for both of these situations exist today; it’s just a matter of Twitter deciding to open up APIs and to determine what this small company of 25 people who have achieved major influence wants to be when they grow up.

What You Need to Know Before You Get Started on eBay

So you’ve decided you want to get started as a seller on eBay. There are a few things you really need to know before you go and throw yourself in at the deep end.

Selling on eBay

First off, you need to know what it is you’re going to sell: what’s your specialty? You’ll do far better on eBay if you become a great source for certain kind of products, as people who are interested in those products will come back to you again and again. You won’t get any loyalty or real reputation if you just sell rubbish at random.

When you think about what to sell, there are a few things to consider. The most important of these is to always sell what you know. If you try to sell something on eBay that you just don’t know anything about then you’ll never write a good description and sell it for a good price.

You might think you’re not especially interested in anything, but if you think about what kind of things you usually buy and which websites you go to most often, I’m sure you’ll discover some kind of interest. If all else fails mention it to your friends and family: they’ll almost certainly say “Oh, well why don’t you sell…”, and you’ll slap your forehead.

Out of the things you know enough about, you should then consider which things you could actually get for a good enough price to resell, and how suitable they would be for posting. If you can think of something of that you’re knowledgeable about and it’s small and light enough for postage to be relatively cheap, then that’s great!

Don’t worry if you think the thing you’re selling is too obscure - it isn’t. There’s a market for almost everything on eBay, even things that wouldn’t sell once in a year if you stocked them in a shop. You’ll probably do even better if you fill a niche than if you sell something common, and believe me, the number of niches on eBay is absolutely mind-blowing.

Tax and Legal Matters

If you earn enough money, you should be aware that you’re going to have to start paying tax - this won’t be done for you. If you decide to sell on eBay on a full-time basis, you should probably register as a business. Of course, even if you sell part-time or in your spare time on eBay, you need to consider these things. I’m no attorney - that’s just my opinion.

Prepare Yourself.

There are going to be ups and downs when you sell on eBay. Don’t pack it in if something goes a little wrong in your first few sales: the sellers who are successful on eBay are the ones who enjoy it, and stick at it whatever happens.
Anyone can sell on eBay, if they believe in themselves - and if you do decide it’s not for you, then the start-up costs are so low that you won’t really have lost anything. If you’re ready to start selling, then the next thing you need to know is the different eBay auction types, so you can decide which ones you will use to sell your items. There’s plenty of information out there that will go into this topic in great detail. Just do on search on Google.
